The Norfolk parish of Freethorpe is located 8 miles south west of the seaside town of Great Yarmouth, and even today the population is less than 1000. However, back in the middle of the 19th century it was small and rural, yet still organised its own race meeting on Thursday 27th March 1845. The main prize was for a Silver Cup donated by Mr J B Farman, landlord of the Rampant Horse Inn. After a hotly contested race dominated by horses owned by Mr Abel, Martinet got the better of Cock Robin. The later Handicap enabled Cock Robin to gain his revenge. There are no further records of racing taking place in the parish. |
